Everything that is spoken can not be a piece of poetry, every other sound can not become a piece of music. The same way, every other image can not be a good photograph or a good image. In the same way a poet uses the grammar to make a beautiful poetry, or a musician organizes the musical notes rhythmically, I feel that a visual artist also has to follow the visual grammar, to create an aesthetic image. The visual elements of an image has to be organised in such a way that it makes the unified visionary effect on the viewer.
The way one senses the pleasure of a good music, in the same way, while seeing, one also feels the pleasure of a good image, which is balanced and organised harmoniously and rhythmically.
There are infinite ways to organize the visual elements to create harmony and balance in an image. The image maker(a visual artist) has to follow his/her instincts and intuition to realize the rhythm and harmony of an image.
Unlike any other arts, perhaps visual art is more complex and has many things to consider, like shape, form, color, value, direction, movement, space, perspective etc…etc…
So the artist needs to be much more care full about the coherent organisation of all these elements in to an aesthetic image.
Holidays are here, and summer camps everywhere, children around are busy engaged in some sports or arts program.
In the recent days I had sight of a children’s skating camp near by my residence in Vijayawada. As I felt that the atmosphere at the camp was very interesting, I decided to have couple of photo sessions at the camp.
I always like to draw various compositions out of the crowds, I enjoyed shooting some images at this place, many children on a single stage, criss crossing each other in various movements, moods and gestures.
More importantly, I took this photo session as to reassert my changing visual perception and interpretations. And the outcome of this is, the images of simple, harmonious and aesthetic design.
Recently I was on a visit to my native place, Vijayawada, where I shot few young classical dancers, getting prepared for the Kuchipudi(Indian classical dance form) performance. Since my nephew is one of the dance troupe, I could go to her teacher’s house couple of hours before, where these young girls were getting ready for the performance in colorful costumes, head gears, jeweleries all over, and make up of their faces with attractive eyebrows, colorful lips. It is interesting to see that the mothers of these children are more nervous and are helping their children look better in the costumes.
At home for several days, back from my travel, I have been working on those images I have shot during the travel. Intuitively, most of the images I recently shot, have been taken a new shape, rather I can say a new way of compositions.
At some point of time during the trip, I observed in myself, the degree of freedom I was undergoing while seeing and shooting, altogether, in the process of image making. Going through those images now, and selecting, segregating, editing, etc..etc…. all these weekdays went on just thinking about what’s good and what’s not. The self judgement about ones own images against what we feel & think beautiful and appropriate.
In this process, at certain moment, it struck to my mind that, while I was choosing the images, my visual senses are working in certain way and filtering the images accordingly and finally picking out some as the best. After been realized what exactly I was choosing, and the kind of compositions I was looking for, I become much more clear about what I feel I wanted.
Then I decided, OK, let’s shoot some new images and composed in the same way what I felt is good while segregating. Immediately, I took my camera out and started shooting things around, it was an experience of, unconscious becoming conscious.
Of course, I have shot these kind of compositions earlier too, but the difference now is, I am much more aware of how the compositions are going to be made, and every little thing is beautiful in the image. I felt nothing is inappropriate for photography, provided it is presented aesthetically.
According to one of the visual theories, beauty lies in the arrangement, simply putting it, beauty lies in the composition. It applies to every art, be it visual arts or music in that matter. In the way, the arrangement of musical notes gives beauty to the piece of music, in the same way, the harmonious arrangement of the visual objects in an image adds beauty to it…..
Anyways, in between, after all these mumbo jumbo running around in my mind, I eventually have published five new collections on to my web gallery. Hope you will enjoy too….
